Hydraulic Cylinders on Excavators: What Operators Need to Know
Excavators are built to handle demanding work. Digging, lifting, grading, trenching, demolition, and material handling all place significant stress on the machine's hydraulic system. At the heart of that system are hydraulic cylinders that convert hydraulic pressure into the powerful movement operators rely on every day.
The boom, arm, and bucket cylinders are essential to an excavator's operation. When one begins to fail, the effects can be noticeable almost immediately. The machine may lose power, movements may become slow or uneven, or hydraulic fluid may begin leaking from the cylinder.
For excavator operators, knowing what to look for and how to operate the machine in a way that minimizes unnecessary stress can help extend hydraulic cylinder life and prevent unexpected downtime.
The Three Main Hydraulic Cylinders on an Excavator
Most excavators rely on three primary groups of hydraulic cylinders to control the digging equipment.
Boom Cylinders
Boom cylinders control the raising and lowering of the excavator's boom. Because the boom supports the weight of the arm and bucket while also handling the forces generated during digging and lifting, these cylinders can experience significant loads.
Arm or Stick Cylinder
The arm cylinder controls the movement of the stick, allowing the operator to extend and retract the arm during digging and positioning. It works continuously during many excavation tasks, making it particularly important to overall machine performance.
Bucket Cylinder
The bucket cylinder controls the curling and dumping action of the bucket. It is subjected to substantial force when breaking into hard ground, digging through compacted material, or handling heavy loads.
Each cylinder performs a different job, but they all depend on clean hydraulic fluid, properly functioning seals, smooth rod surfaces, and correct operation.
Watch for Hydraulic Leaks
One of the easiest warning signs for an excavator operator to spot is hydraulic fluid leaking from a cylinder.
A small amount of fluid around a cylinder rod may indicate that a seal or wiper is beginning to deteriorate. While it can be tempting to simply wipe it clean and continue working, a developing leak should not be ignored.
As seals wear, the leak can become progressively worse. Loss of hydraulic fluid can eventually affect system performance, while contamination can enter through damaged seals and cause additional internal wear.
If you notice a new or worsening leak, report it and have the cylinder inspected before the problem becomes more serious.
Pay Attention to the Hydraulic Rod
The exposed chrome-plated rod is one of the most important parts of a hydraulic cylinder to monitor.
During your daily walkaround, look for:
Scratches or scoring
Pitting or rust
Dents
Bent rods
Flaking or damaged chrome
Excessive oil around the rod
Dirt or debris buildup
A damaged rod can quickly destroy seals as the cylinder moves. Even relatively small scratches or areas of corrosion can create a rough surface that wears against the seals.
Keeping the exposed portion of the rod clean can help you spot damage early.
Avoid Side Loading the Cylinder
Hydraulic cylinders are designed to produce force along a specific path. Side loading occurs when forces are applied to the cylinder from an angle rather than directly along its intended line of movement.
Excavators can experience side loading when digging at awkward angles, working on uneven ground, or using the bucket in ways that place unusual forces on the boom, arm, or bucket assembly.
Worn pins and bushings can also contribute to unwanted movement and misalignment.
When operating, use smooth and controlled movements whenever possible. Avoid forcing the bucket sideways or using the excavator's hydraulic cylinders to perform tasks they were not designed to do.
Be Careful When Digging Hard Material
Digging through extremely hard, frozen, or compacted material puts considerable stress on the entire excavator.
If the bucket becomes stuck, repeatedly applying maximum hydraulic force may place excessive loads on the cylinders and other components.
Instead, consider repositioning the machine, changing the digging angle, or using the appropriate attachment for the material.
This is particularly important in Alberta, where frozen ground can create challenging conditions during the winter months.
Keep Hydraulic Cylinders Clean
Excavator cylinders operate in environments where dirt, mud, rocks, and other debris are unavoidable.
However, allowing contaminants to build up around cylinder rods and seals can accelerate wear.
During regular equipment cleaning, pay attention to the cylinder assemblies. Remove accumulated mud and debris, particularly around the rod and seal area.
If you are pressure washing the machine, take care around seals and other sensitive components. High-pressure water directed at seals can potentially force contaminants or moisture into areas where they do not belong.
Don't Ignore Unusual Cylinder Movement
Experienced operators often notice changes in machine behaviour before a cylinder completely fails.
Pay attention if a cylinder begins to:
Move more slowly than usual
Hesitate during operation
Move unevenly
Drift when it should hold position
Make unusual noises
Require more engine power than normal
Show inconsistent performance
These symptoms can have several possible causes, so they don't necessarily mean the cylinder itself has failed. However, they are good reasons to have the hydraulic system inspected.
Catching a developing problem early can mean a much smaller repair instead of a complete cylinder rebuild or replacement.
Daily Inspections Can Make a Big Difference
A few minutes during your pre-shift inspection can help identify problems before they result in downtime.
Before operating your excavator, take a look at the hydraulic cylinders and check for visible leaks, damaged rods, loose components, corrosion, and unusual wear.
Also inspect the areas around cylinder mounting points, pins, and bushings. Excessive wear in these areas can affect cylinder alignment and contribute to premature damage.
If something doesn't look right, don't assume it will take care of itself.
When a Cylinder Needs Professional Attention
Hydraulic cylinders are highly engineered components. When a cylinder requires more than a minor maintenance adjustment, professional inspection and repair can help ensure the underlying problem is addressed.
A proper hydraulic cylinder repair may involve complete disassembly, cleaning, inspection, seal replacement, rod repair or rechroming, machining, reassembly, and pressure testing.
Simply replacing a seal without addressing a damaged rod, worn components, or another underlying issue may result in another failure shortly afterward.
